Monicat Data assists creative businesses by helping them understand how to effectively implement data and technology solutions. This service is crucial to creatives who may not know how to utilize data to its fullest. Currently, Monicat does this work entirely in person, which spends a lot of time and resources. Monicat Data presented us with the opportunity to create a solution to digitize their in-person process, allowing users to analyze data on their own with a new web application.

Translate Monicat Data’s in-person experience into a digital format without reducing quality from face-to-face operations.


Approach

The main struggles in converting this in-person service to a digital format were:

  • business categorization

  • assessing client needs

  • broad user base

To get a better idea of how this platform could work, my team and I performed user interviews and sent out surveys. We tested a potential UI flow and sought out general value from users of different data knowledge & experience levels.

Now that we had our skeleton and received feedback on value points from our users, I took on the responsibility of generating features. The team took time to brainstorm ideas and consolidate to the best-of.

Feature Sketch

I drafted a kano analysis survey to further narrow these features down, and created mid-fidelity wireframes of the top five features. This allowed my team to gain a focus of potential testing material in our next round of research.

With our feature evaluation complete, we learned that users valued features which provided them education & onboarding, features that gave them valuable insights and recommendations from their data, and also features that compared their data to other companies in the industry.

With our dashboard skeleton already in place and value provided from our feature findings, we developed a high fidelity dashboard with the new findings implemented.

Reflection

As the Monicat Data online platform did not exist, this project provided my team a good amount of ambiguity throughout. We faced challenges where nobody truly knew the next step but we were able to put our heads together in these difficult times and decide on the next direction. For next time, I believe we could ask our client more focused questions to help uncover some of that unknown area to take that next step quicker.
